Living in a way that supports the health of our planet and protects our families health can feel VERY overwhelming, trust me, I get it. I did the whole thing, getting crazy paranoid, trying to change all the things at once and feeling so bad about the things I hadn't known. I have found way more balance in my sustainable, low tox living approach.

It is in no way perfect but making small changes at home overtime can have a big impact. I’ve found that adopting a few easy swaps helped me create a sustainable home that supports low tox living without adding insane stress, worry or extra work. If you want to reduce harmful chemicals and live more sustainably, these five swaps are a great place to start.

Hand holding a mesh bag with bread, zucchini, and carrots on a kitchen counter. White tiled wall, green plant above, utensils in the background.

Swap Single-Use Plastics for Reusable Alternatives

Plastic waste is one of the biggest challenges for sustainable living. Many everyday items like water bottles, shopping bags, and food wraps are made from single-use plastic that ends up in landfills or oceans. Switching to reusable options is simple and effective.

These swaps reduce plastic waste and limit your exposure to chemicals that can leach from plastics into your food and drinks. Plus, reusable items, when taken care of properly often last for years, saving you a lot of money over time.

Choose Natural Cleaning Products

Many conventional cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that can irritate skin, eyes, and lungs. They also release toxins into the air and water. Switching to natural cleaning products supports a low tox living environment and a sustainable home.

Natural cleaners are often just as effective as conventional cleaners and much safer for your family and pets. Using natural cleaners also reduces the number of harmful chemicals entering your home and the environment when you dispose of them.

Replace Synthetic Air Fresheners with Plants or Essential Oils

Artificial air fresheners often contain phthalates and other chemicals linked to health problems. Instead of masking odors with synthetic scents, try natural alternatives that improve air quality.

  • Add houseplants like spider plants, snake plants, or peace lilies that naturally and effectively filter indoor air.

  • Use essential oil diffusers with scents like lavender, eucalyptus, or citrus.

  • Open windows regularly to let fresh air circulate.

These swaps create a fresher, healthier atmosphere without introducing any toxins. Plants also add so much beauty and contribute to a calm, grounded vibe in your living space.

Switch to Organic, Non-Toxic Bedding and Towels

Our skin can absorb chemicals from the fabrics we wear and use daily, especially things like bedding and towels. Conventional synthetic textiles often contain chemicals from manufacturing, flame retardants, and synthetic dyes. Synthetic materials do not breathe, and often shed microplastics into the water ways when washing. Choosing organic, non-toxic options supports both sustainability and your health.

  • Buy bedding made from organic cotton, linen, or bamboo

  • Look for cotton towels certified free of harmful chemicals

  • Avoid wrinkle-resistant or stain-resistant articles as for this to be possible the manufacturer has to add toxins

Cozy bedroom with wooden bed, layered pillows, and neutral tones. Plants by windows with sheer curtains enhance airy, serene mood.

Organic textiles are softer, breath better and are safer for our skin. They also reduce environmental harm from pesticide use, chemical manufacturing and processing.

Use Energy-Efficient Lighting and Appliances

Energy use at home contributes to pollution and climate change, also has a major impact on your monthly budget. Making your home more energy-efficient supports a sustainable home and can drastically lower utility bills.

  • Replace incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs that use less energy and last longer - I opt for a warm light vs a bright white/blue based light to add ambiance and create a cozy calm sense in the home.

  • Choose Energy Star-rated appliances for cooking, laundry, and refrigeration.

  • Unplug devices when not in use to avoid “phantom” energy drain - this is a REAL thing, it is crazy the draw that devices have when not in use, so simple to unplug and it can save a lot of energy use, plus it saves unnecessary $ spent on utilities. Track your energy use for one billing cycle when you unplug devices not in use - compare with a past bill where they were left plugged in - you may be very surprised the difference it makes!

  • Turn lights off when you leave the room - seriously this is a major thing in a household with tiny humans, the lights all over, in every room are left on. You can tell exactly where they have been because all the lights left on in their wake. Making a conscious effort to turn lights off when you leave the room, and teaching our littles to do the same is another great way to save money, and reduce energy consumption.

These swaps can really reduce your carbon footprint and create a more eco-friendly, low tox, comfortable household. Over time, energy savings can add up to significant financial benefits as well.

Making these five swaps has helped me create a home environment that feels healthier, cozy and more connected to the environment and the impact our choices have on it. Natural textiles, the absence of harsh chemicals and fragrances completely changes the feel of the home. Sustainable living and low tox living don’t require drastic changes or mega expensive products - it takes intention and a shift in our mindset. Small, thoughtful choices add up to a big difference overtime for your family’s well-being and the planet’s future.

I love my spider plant and peace Lillie’s! I totally agree - also the clothing we wear I try to avoid polyester and acrylic fabrics and opt for natural - lasts way longer and feels better! And you don’t have to treat it as carefully in the wash :)
