The Birth of Mother Made

Becoming a Mom is the most challenging venture I have ever experienced

My husband Jean and I welcomed our first child together when I was 26, a beautiful baby girl.

This baby girl was born 5 weeks earlier than we expected.

My water broke at home when I sat down at the kitchen island for dinner, and thus commenced the state of shock I would be in for the next 3-4 weeks.

The first induction failed. The second one worked, and after 46 hours of intense labor she was earthside.

Shortly after her arrival she was whisked away to the NICU, my husband followed her and I was left in a quiet room with my nurse. I remember just feeling stunned, and sore.

What just happened?

My first birth, certainly not what I had expected, and not what I had prepared for. Couldn't have ended up further from.

Here we go Mama, Earn those stripes.

I swear I was straight stunned for my first few weeks of motherhood.

Emersed, worried, scared, healing -- emerging into Motherhood.

The birth of that baby girl was really the birth of two, one into life and me into Motherhood.

Birth is very uncomfortable. It is transformational.

I remember the day we were released from hospital. I remember feeling so anxious and unsure.

Can I do this? Can I be the Mother this baby deserves?

Filled with joy, excitement, self doubt and worry I ventured out into the world, but this time as Mom.

It took some time for me to get my feet under me in my mothering.

It took time for the gravity to set in that everything in our life had changed, forever.

Just over two years later we welcomed our second child together, a baby boy.

This baby too arrived earlier than expected.

However, the birth of our son wasn’t accompanied by the same worry and state of shock that I had felt postpartum with our daughter.

Watching me in the early moments with our son, my husband said to me “You have already grown so much as a mother” -- and it clicked for me.

That’s it, you grow into Motherhood. You learn and grow as a mother as your littles grow alongside you.

We don't ever get to a point where we are just "good moms". Our role is ever evolving over the lifetime of our children, into their adolescence and adulthood.

I am learning and growing each day and with each new experience in this role, with these tiny humans.

The birth of a baby merely marks the infancy of motherhood.

We try and best prepare ourselves by reading books, participating in community groups, gathering information, materials and resources, but the real learning takes place only once we’re fully immersed in all that being a Mother is.

In my experience, being a Mom is entirely different from what I had imagined and prepared for.

Becoming a mother has ignited my greatest passions. My children are my inspiration in everything. I yearn to wholesomely nourish them through their rearing, mind, body and spirit.

I have spent countless hours researching, reading, experimenting, refining (& Worrying about) every little thing in our life.

Cooking, nutrition, cleaning, examples I am setting for them, screen time, no screen time, adventures and creating core memories.

I became acutely aware of the way I care for myself, for my relationship with their father and the example we setting for them.

Fueled by anxiety and worry that I would somehow fail my children I have worked tirelessly to educate myself so that I can make the best decisions for them, for our family.

Motherhood is overwhelming at a baseline. There is so much to do, to know, to not do, to do differently, better, faster, more patiently.

We exist in a culture with unrealistic expectations for what it is to be a "good mom". Its a rigged game and spoiler alert, we cant win.

We win when we turn inwards, listen to our intuition and let her guide us in making the right decisions for our children and families.

Motherhood has changed me.

If you would have told those closest to me 5 years ago that this is the life I would be leading, they would have told you there is just no way.

Motherhood has elevated my state of consciousness.

I have great aspirations to be the most loving wife to my partner, the most conscious, present, loving mother to my children.

I am human. I am flawed. I am imperfect.

I am learning. I am growing.

I am dedicated to leading my family with love, curiosity and wonder. I hope to nourish my love for learning and lead my children with that example.

I hold a firm belief that strength is sourced from the family. The foundation for the nourishment of little minds and bodies is established at home.

I have always found such satisfaction in working with my hands, crafting, growing, creating, cooking.

Recognizing this has made me feel confident I can hand craft the life I dream of for myself, my husband and our children.

A life made with love, Mother Made.

I am working to reduce the exposure of toxins in our day to day lives.

We are learning to grow our own food and acquire the skills to be more self sustainable and independent earthlings.

I am working to create an environment in our home that entices learning and fuels curiosity and exploration.

I believe that the way to a fulfilled, peaceful life is rooted in a return to a simpler way of living.

Mother Made is a vessel to connect and share all that I have learned with you.
