Calendula, also known as pot marigold, is so much more than just an outrageously beautiful flower. For centuries, this flower has been cherished not only for its stunning appearance but also for its numerous healing properties and health benefits.
Let's explore a bit of the history of calendula and its healing properties, show you why I love it and how it earns the title of “magic herb.”

A Brief History of Calendula
There is well documented, widespread use of calendula in many ancient cultures
Historical records that indicate that Calendula flourished in ancient Egypt, where it was prized not just for its beauty but also for its healing abilities. It was commonly used in sacred rituals as the Ancient Egyptians celebrated calendula as a symbol of the sun and all of its power. Calendula extracts were often mixed into salves for skin treatments, as it was believed that it could rejuvenate the skin.
In Medieval Europe, calendula held a vital place in folk medicine. Herbalists commonly used it to treat various ailments, such as cuts, burns, and skin irritations.
Calendula also showed up in historic, traditional Indian Ayurvedic practices. The flower was believed to symbolize purity and promote healing.

Calendula can help stimulate collagen production which further boosts its reputation as a healing and rejuvenating plant.

Thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties, it is excellent for soothing skin irritations, rashes, and minor burns. Calendula is very soothing, and restoring so it effectively works as a remedy for skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis - although I believe the root cause of these conditions are linked to imbalances in the gut, calendula can be used to sooth topically during flare ups. One of my favorite ways to use calendula is in a bath steep -- I put dried flowers in a mesh bag and steep into my bath water for a relaxing, rejuvenating soak.
